“Transportation Technologies Trade Mission to Turkey on March 26-31, 2017
We, as the U.S. Commercial Service in Turkey, believe that this is the “right time” for the trade mission, because the “liberalization of railways” regulation to permit private sector firms to transport goods/carry passengers with their own locomotives finally came into force in Turkey on 19th of August, 2016. $150 billion worth of investment only in rail is expected by 2023. An authorization for each area of work (passengers, cargo handling, organization and terminal management) will need to be issued, each costing between $8-35. Those who will apply for a permit for passenger wagons (DB1) will be asked to own/lease at least six passenger wagons and two locomotives to transport these wagons or two sets of trains. For cargo shipment applicants, 1500 tons capacity will be mandatory. With this new regulation, new wagon demand in the Turkish market is expected to increase 10,000. Experts state that the Turkish rail market catches high interest from China, Bulgaria, Poland, Italy and Spain. German Deutche Bahn and Austrian Rail Cargo plan on transporting goods with their own wagons and locomotives, and some wagon producers like American Greenbrier are looking into manufacturing wagons in Turkey.
Turkey is at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, because of its geographic location the Government of Turkey is making significant infrastructure investments totaling approximately $250 billion dollars! Now is the opportune time for US companies to pursue business development in the Turkish transportation sector markets. A few project examples: A New Airport in Istanbul which is predicted to be the largest in the world when completed with an anticipated 150 million passengers per year, recently completed 3rd Bosphorus and Gebze Crossing Bridges and a new 2 story Bosphorus Car Tunnel under construction, large expansion of the high speed rail network and outcome of the liberalization of the freight rail network.
The trade mission will stop in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir and is targeted at US firms that provide hi-tech equipment, systems and technology solutions from all four modes of transportation; air & rail & land & marine. It will provide an opportunity to meet with Turkish business partners, industry representatives, Turkish municipal officials, and government officials and will include one-on-one meetings, networking events and site visits, in addition to meetings with private industry representatives and US Embassy specialists from partnership posts of Turkey, namely Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkmenistan. The cost is anticipated to be $4,700 for large size firms and $3,700 for SMEs. Pls. also let us mention that your Turkish office/reps can also participate the full program.
